The capital of Fryslân has a rich past and the Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden (HCL) brings it to life with exhibitions, films, guided tours, living history, publications, education projects and historical activities.
The HCL’s main focus is preserving the municipal and private archives of Leeuwarden, which date back as far as the Middle Ages. The HCL also houses the largest image collection of the northern Netherlands, an extensive library with books and multimedia and a municipal art collection.
It is also custodian of Archaeological Centre Leeuwarden, the leaning tower of Oldehove and the nearby Pier Pander Museum with Temple. The HCL also dedicates itself to preserving the Liwwadder city dialect.
